I always thought that they were considered relatively benign as the arm
veins were too small to lead to a clinically significant embolus.

Subject: Subclavian vein thrombosis
I have just seen a 34 M fit and well with a two day history of gradual
swelling of his left hand. Clinically it looks like a spontaneous
axillary vein thrombosis. I have discussed it with our Radiology HOD. He
doesn't think a venogram is required and a Duplex can wait till
tomorrow. Is that the common mode of management in most places. Would
any department consider early diagnosis and thrombolysis?
Cheers
Ash
