I thought that some readers might like to know that there will be a Quaker
Memorial Meeting for Harriet Wilson on Saturday, 9 November, at 14.00 at the
Friends Meeting House, Jesus Lane, Cambridge. It will be followed by tea.
Drivers are advised to use Park and Ride to Round Church/St John's College.
I copy below a note from Martin Barnes, the Director of CPAG.
Adrian Sinfield.
Dr Harriet Wilson - founder of CPAG
'Driving spirit for action against child poverty'
Dr Harriet C. Wilson, the founder of the Child Poverty Action Group, died on
July 14th 2002. In 1964 Harriet published a pamphlet, Poverty in Britain
Today. In March 1965 she arranged a meeting at Toynbee Hall, London, so that
Brian Abel-Smith, co-author with Peter Townsend, could report on their study
on poverty in Britain, The Poor and the Poorest. It was Harriet's hope that
the meeting would result in the creation of a pressure group - CPAG was
born.
A memorial service will be held in the autumn. An obituary, written by Frank
Field MP, a former Director of CPAG, was published in the Guardian newspaper
on July 26th.
