To Melinda and all those who subscribe to any mailing lists of this type:
All requests to subscribe, unsubscribe, and change options are handled
automatically by a computer. Generally, no human is involved in the
process. The computer does not care how pitifully you plead or how
righteous your indignation at being ignored may be. It quietly and
patiently obeys the precise instructions given to it. It cannot detect
instructions sent to the list, but simply regards them dispassionately as
messages whose content it cannot understand and does not care about anyway.
To provoke a response from the computer, you must direct the message to a
different address. Messages sent to this other address are scanned by the
computer for instructions and, if any or found, it calmly and efficiently
obeys them. It will sometimes even tell you what small fraction of its time
was necessary to find and complete the instruction. (That's the sort of
thing computers think is important.)
In this case, the message must be sent to:
[log in to unmask]
with the message:
leave QUAL-SOFTWARE

The two hyphens instruct the computer to stop scanning so that it will not
try to process your signature. Or you can just send the message with no
signature.
