Dan,
The points about microphone and sampling rate are important. I always
recorded at 11 khz 8bit mono but increasing to 22khz improves the sound
dramatically. The other point is if you use the mic socket on a sound card
the internal electrical noise of the computer can make a mess of the
recording because the signals are weak. The solution is to use the line in
socket with a mike that is powered or has its own preamplifier.
There is a discussion of all of these issues in the CTANKS and CISAID help
files.
