Rebecca - try and get hold of Version 2 of the Nvivo software, it makes
backing up and duplicating projects much easier and more reliable (and also
condenses the project so its easier to move around)
..just a couple of initial thoughts..
Its difficult to measure how easy the merge process is - it depends what you
are comparing it with and how often you need to do it - but I'd say that
Nvivo makes it pretty easy and a fairly safe and systematic process. YOU
need to know ahead of time what tools you should NOT use if planning to
merge .e.g. if using the same data set you shoudl not use the Annotation
(Internal databyte) tool. You should not change the length of any data file
if coding work on it is going to be merged with somebody elses work on it.
I think too it also depends how much and how often you are going to depend
on merging routinely as a way to be continually working with the same
merged project from day to day....
As an occasional bringing together - (and then redistribution between you) i
think its very workable. Not sure I'd want to be responsible for doing it
every day. But I guess its possible. You would certainly get very familiar
with the actual merge process (its not difficult anyway)... the difficulty
woudl be in managing the multiplication of new merged projects - sticking to
a good 'project naming' protocol, so you don't lose track of which one is
most up to date, and what the constituent parts of each are, and keeping an
eagle eye for what might not be working (for instance of someone in the team
has overlooked the way he/she has to work with Merge in mind, and altered a
datafile.
