Belinda (and interested others):
In the 1930s, Miles Tinker and his colleagues used photographic techniques
to study eye movements in reading. They varied typeface, print size, page
layout, etc. and studied the resulting effects on reading speed and patterns
of eye movements. See
Tinker, M. A. (1963). Legibility of Print. Ames, Iowa: Iowa State
University Press.
for a thorough review of this work.

If anyone replies to Belinda off-list, could you perhaps also share/Cc: to
the list proper as well. Or, if Belinda gets any private responses,
perhaps she could send a summary to the list. Thanks,
Jeffrey
