Dear Dr. Mohsaiov
I am Tirthankar Sengupta from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. At present I am working on relationship of eye and mouse movements. My interest is in obtaining the relationship of cognitive processing and the subsequent motor action manifested in mouse movements in the area of computer interaction. However the study does not restrict itself to the computer but also to the different forms of products which bear an interface. I am studying the the eye movements under different task situations like task understanding, formalization of plan, execution of the actions and then the subsequent evaluation. In different situations the mouse and the eye obviously behave differently however the task has a dominent effect on the movements rather than the interface.
I would like to know what might be the different methods to analyse the eye movement data obtained as a series of coordiantes in time. Cluster analysis techniques are most popular. Identifying number of saccades based on velocity and gaze durations based on localization of fixation is also another method.
Thanks for the mention of papers like the behavioral model of vision perception and recognition. I will mail you some of the references I have collected which studies eye movements and cognitive processes. I think you might be aware of this book.:
Eye movements and Psychological Processes edited by Richard A. Monty and John W. Sanders. this is a collection of studies eye movements were studied for understanding cognitive processes.

My name is Dr. A. Moshaiov and I am from Tel-Aviv University. I work in the area of robotics. During my research in computer vision I became interested in pseudo-retina models such as in:
Rybak, I. A., Gusakova, V.I., Golovan, A.V., Podladchikova, L.N., Shevtsova, N.A.: BMV: Behavioral Model of Vision Perception and Recognition, Vision Research 38, (1998) 2387-2400
The above work is based on :
Noton, D., Stark, L.W.: Scanpaths in Eye Movements During Pattern Perception. Science, 171 (3968), (1971) 308-311
In particular the results of Noton and Stark prompted the consideration of eye movement scanpaths as behavioral programs for recognition. Rybak et al. have used the behavioral approach and implemented the where and what of a scan-path for their object recognition space-variant system. Rybak et al. suggest that the findings of Yarbus 1967 are in support of their approach.
During my attempt to look into computer learning and detection of partially occluded objects, using a retina-like model, I have started to wonder about Rybak's approach. It appeared to me that because of the unknown whereabouts of the occlusion the behavioral approach should need a modification. Furthermore, I do not find Yarbus results in support of the behavioral approach.
I am interested to know if any of the colleagues reading this message can provide me with more insight. I know from reading a 1995 review of E. Kowler that there are works that link eye-movements to cognition. I am in-particular interested in:
1. A recent review on eye-movements (preferable with a comparison on behavior vs. cognitive approach)
2. Eye-movements (saccades) recordings that compare results of object learning stage with those of object recognition stage (Preferable with changing level of occlusion).
3.In addition I would like to know if there are works that combine eye movement recordings with neural activity recordings, both in general and in particular to the above topic.
I will be glad to know if there are any colleagues who are currently doing related research (items 2 &3). Else to find colleagues who are interested in collaboration on the described topic.
Sincerely,
A. Moshaiov
