Subject: Press Statement from AQA Inquiry into A Level Standards
Inquiry into A Level Standards
27 September, 2002
AQA welcomes the finding of the report that its Director General acted
according to the Code of Practice and with integrity in the setting of
grades for this summer's A-levels. The report confirms that AQA's Chairs of
Examiners recognised that a proper balance between assessment of work and
statistical evidence was required in determining grades. Without exception
grades were set within the ranges agreed by the Chairs of Examiners.
The report also states that, for A-level in 2002, AQA's grading process
resulted in only 26 upward changes to recommended unit grade boundaries and
that all but 3 of these changes were of one or two marks and all were within
the limits agreed by the Chairs of Examiners. These changes were well
within the parameters of previous practice.
AQA is committed to taking forward the recommendations in the Tomlinson
Report and to reviewing each of the 26 boundaries which were affected. This
review will be conducted within the timetable in the Tomlinson Report. The
review will be entirely transparent and will be subject to independent
scrutiny.
