On H-Disability list, 31 July 02, Paul Longmore posted a paper by Julie
Sullivan detailing the shredding of sterilization records in Oregon. The
article quotes another eugenics historian stating that this kind of clean-
up has been nationwide.
These acts are of course portrayed as a terrible tragedy... But maybe the
lesson of history could be that some well-intentioned activities in which
dis-research participants are now engaged, believing them to be supportive
of good policy, and kind to little old ladies too, may in 15-20 years time
be perceived as criminal, and open for legal pursuit of the perpetrators.
The thoughtful Jaina adept brushes the path before her, to avoid treading
on tiny creatures. The prudent researcher maybe should brush the path
behind him (NO suggestions as to how this should be done), to erase his
track and avoid being trodden on by posterity...
