PhD studentship in Society and Technology
Applications are invited for a studentship to carry out research in
research into innovative and effective ways of delivering e-government. The
aim of the research will be to investigate ways in which e-government can
bring policy change (for example, policy innovation or new electronic
methods of government-citizen interaction) and the societal implications of
such change. For example, new forms of personal electronic record in
health, social care and criminal justice bring a new 'virtual identity' for
citizens, opening new policy windows but attempts to create them are
raising new organizational, cultural and ethical questions for policy-makers.
The studentship is offered jointly by the Department of Computer Science
and the School of Public Policy at UCL. The proposed work is part of a new
collaboration between the two disciplines concerning the understanding of
the interplay between society and technology. Funding is available for 3 years.
Applicants should have a first class or upper second class bachelors degree
in Political Science, Economics, Computer Science or in a related field and
must satisfy the EPSRC eligibility requirements.
The Department of Computer Science offers an excellent research environment
and has a long established international record for its work in applied
Computer Science. Further information about the Department can be found at
www.cs.ucl.ac.uk.
The School of Public Policy is UCL's centre of expertise in political
science and public policy. It has an extensive research programme geared
towards identifying core policy problems and developing generic policy
solutions using a range of methodologies drawn from political science,
economics, law and other disciplines key to public policy research. Further
information can be found at www.ucl.ac.uk/spp
Applicants should send a completed graduate admissions form (available at
www.ucl.ac.uk/admissions/pg/appadmis.html) including an outline proposal to
Dr. Janet McDonnell, Department of Computer Science, University College
London, Gower Street, London WC1E 6BT.
The closing date for applications is 29th November 2002.
