The Conference on Designing Pleasurable Products and Interfaces
DPPI 2003
June 23-26, 2003
Carnegie Mellon University
Pittsburgh, PA USA
Call for Participation
Issues of affective and emotional response to products are
exceedingly important within the communities of human factors,
product design, and design research. As people become more sensitive
to the aesthetic and emotional dimensions of products that go beyond
traditional aspects of usability, the need to understand and create
resonance between people and products increases. However, our
communities need a shared perspective and language for talking about
affective design and human factors.
The DPPI03 Conference will address the issues of affective and
emotional response to products, joining together professionals from
various disciplines to help shape this new field in both research
and practice. We will engage in three days of dialogue and
intellectual debate on interdisciplinary theories, methods, and
tools to begin to understand how to design to sustain mood and evoke
emotion.
The conference will be co-sponsored by the School of Design at
Carnegie Mellon University, in Pittsburgh, PA, USA, and (pending
approval) the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), a major
force in advancing the skills of information technology
professionals and students worldwide. We welcome researchers and
practitioners from a variety of disciplines, including but not
limited to Anthropology, Engineering, Experimental Psychology, Human
Factors, Interaction Design,Industrial Design, Marketing, Product
Design, and Usability. We hope that you will join us for this
exciting conference.
Participation Categories and Topics
The DPPI03 Conference, most recently held as the Conference on
Affective Human Factors (CAHD) in Singapore, 2001, is one of the
leading international forums for the exchange of ideas and
information about affective design. We invite submissions in three
categories - papers, workshops, and posters - on a full range of
topics related to affective design, including but not limited to the
following:
* How can we predict, design, and measure emotional response to products?
* How can we design emotional interfaces?
* What theories, methods, and processes from human factors and
design can be applied to affective design?
* What tools do educators need to support affective design?
Submission Dates at a Glance
Papers January 10, 2003
Workshops January 10, 2003
Posters February 17, 2003
See the DPPI03 website in early October at
