Introduction
The Children's Hospital at Westmead (CHW) is a large 350-bed university
based tertiary freestanding children's hospital in Sydney's Western area.
The hospital is affiliated with the University of Sydney. This hospital
services the greater western region of Sydney and provides tertiary services
to the state of New South Wales and parts of the South Pacific.
The CHW Emergency Department (ED) is part of the division of medicine and is
one of the busiest emergency departments in the state of New South Wales
with 42,000 presentations annually and an admission rate of up to 37%. The
department has a high patient acuity and is the major Paediatric Trauma Unit
and the tertiary referral Paediatric Burns Unit covering all of metropolitan
Sydney, New South Wales and parts of the South pacific. These services are
supported by a large general and specialist intensive care unit.

Position for Research Fellow in Emergency Medicine
The Emergency Department is offering a 12-month research fellowship in
Paediatric Emergency Medicine to start January 2003.
Candidates wishing to apply will be in their advanced training years and
ideally have completed examinations for FRACP or FACEM or overseas
equivalent. The candidate will have spent a minimum of 12 months in an
accredited Paediatric teaching hospital.
A minimum pre-requisite of 12 months of paediatrics is required, including
exposure to intensive care.
Research Component
The main focus of the year is clinically based research with the main area
being the unit's current projects looking at the management of
gastroenteritis in the Emergency Department. Some of the data collection
performed by the fellow will be after hours.
Goal: Acquire knowledge and skills needed to become a productive
investigator.
Implementation:
1. Become familiar with the design, ethics committee submission,
implementation, completion, and writing up of a research project.
2. Submission of a paper to a journal for publication by the end of the 12
month fellowship.
3. Development of computing skills including Word, Powerpoint, Excel, ABC
flowcharter. This is supported by formal courses throughout the year
available through information technology.
4. Development of an understanding of databases and statistical analysis
using Access and SPPS. The Fellow can also attend formal courses throughout
the year on databases available through information technology CHW.
5. The Fellow will attend and be actively involved in the department's
regular research meetings. All research projects are reviewed at this
meeting and the progress of specific projects evaluated. This meeting is
under the supervision of the Chair of the Emergency Department Research
Committee, Dr Gary Browne.
6. The Fellow may be asked to speak to various groups in relation to the
research project.
Clinical Component
The Fellow will also be expected to work some regular after hours clinical
shifts.
Assessment
Assessment aims to gauge the progress of the fellow. These take place at 3,
6 and 9 months. This assessment is constructive and aims to provide clear
guidelines as to strengths and areas of weakness.
Leave
Conference leave will be granted for one conference during the year. The
fellow will be sponsored to attend if he/she is presenting a paper.
Holidays will comprise four weeks in the 12-month period. The dates of
requested leave should be submitted to Dr Browne within two months of
commencement of the position.
