As far as I'm aware all substantive posts have to be advertised (unless
things like posts created for transfer of consultants during a trust merger
etc.). However, there are a lot of trusts with vacancies (full or part time)
that aren't advertising due to lack of applicants. My advice would be if you
can see a couple of departments you might like to work in to approach the
existing consultants to see whether a post is in the offing (or indeed can
be created). There's a reasonable amount of cash around for innovative ways
of working so you might be able to make yourself a new post. No harm in
trying anyway.
