I can only comment having sat the FACEM and my couple years working in the
UK. For the most part I agree with Cliff. Particularly regarding the
management side of things. I think the EBM stuff is more variable. I did the
bulk of my training in New Zealand (last 18 months in Australia), and the
hospitals I worked at were very focused on EBM, with BET style journal clubs
and heavy critical apprasial of journal articles. I also learnt more from
review articles than from textbooks - although by virtue of the fact the
exam is referenced to Rosen, did use that from time to time (and Tintinalli
abit). So while some centres may be less EBM based, that is not true for
all. Although having Andy Swain after his shift to NZ may have helped the
EBM side of things.
And Cliff, you have met an Australasian trainee who is a Life support
instructor - Im an APLS instructor and was IC for ATLS - but decided to only
do one and found APLS more enjoyable ! (less Surgeons !!!!)I also agree the
instructor course improved 100% my teaching skills. But it is much less
common over here for instructors to be registrars - this is in part (at
least with APLS) a credibiity thing - in the interests of not offending
anyone I wont go into my theory on this one.
Craig (who is still smiling and recovering from his post exam hangover)
