Locum posts are extremely expensive. We have been a consultant down for 3 years and when I told the trust I wouldn't carry on single handedly any longer they agreed to get a locum in. Had my letter of resignation signed. We had a series in and I calculated that with on call sessions etc it was going to cost £250k a year. I even thought of handing in my letter and doing it myself. The thought of only working 3 months a year appealed to me.
