Countering al Qaeda: An Appreciation of the Situation and Suggestions for Strategy

Description: This site provides access to the full text of a book by Brian Jenkins which was published in 2002 by Rand. ISBN 083303264X. It reviews events following the September 11 2001 terrorist attacks, including the progress of the 'war against terrorism' waged against Osama Bin Laden and the Taliban government of Afghanistan and US foreign policy. It then assesses the current terrorist threat posed by the al- Qaeda network and proposes suggestions for future international action. Users should note that the book is in pdf format and therefore requires access to an Adobe Acrobat Reader for use.

European Elections Monitor
Alternative Title: le calendrier des élections en Europe
Description: The European Elections Monitor is a service offered by the Robert Schuman Foundation. It provides a listing of recent and forthcoming parliamentary and presidential elections in Europe. This includes recent results and some analysis of outcomes. Users may sign up to receive updates via email. It should be noted that some information is offered in French only.

Scottish Affairs
Description: Scottish Affairs is a leading academic journal published under the auspices of the Institute of Governance of the University of Edinburgh since 1992. It focuses upon contemporary political and social affairs in Scotland. Its web site provides access to information about the journal including a searchable database of articles some of which may be accessed free of charge. Topics covered include: Scottish national identity, devolved government, the creation of the Scottish Parliament and the welfare state and social policy in Scotland. The site also includes information on publications of the institute and forthcoming events.

Liberty, Equality and Fraternity: Exploring the French Revolution
Description: This site is a collaboration between the Center for History and New Media, George Mason University and the American Social History Project. It provides an excellent introduction to the history, themes and impact of the 1789 French Revolution. It includes access to over 300 primary source documents (including contemporary letters and newspaper accounts of events), over 200 images/prints, maps of Europe and sound files of songs of the period. The browse section contains a number of essays which provide an introduction to the major themes of the Revolution including: its social origins, the fall of the French monarchy, the role of women, rise of Napoleon and long term impact.
