Dear all,

I would like to invite you to attend the next workshop of the UNEP/ SETAC Life Cycle Initiative. It will take place on 1 December in Barcelona at the Escola Superior de Comerc International, Passeig Pujades 1, 08003 Barcelona, Spain, www.esci.es. It is organised back to back with the Joint SETAC Europe and ISIE meeting 2-4 December (10th LCA Case Studies Symposium and Society for Industrial Ecology Meeting in Europe 2002, www.setac.org)

The aim of the workshop is to get input on the work program of the initiative, as laid down in the draft definition study reports under preparation at the moment, and to discuss the preliminary results of the User Needs Survey that has started recently. We will also discuss the role of cases in the work program and the relationship with ongoing research world-wide. The tentative programme is as follows:

9.30h Welcome and coffee
10.00h  Start of the workshop - general introduction of state of the art of the initiative;
Helias Udo de Haes (including cases) and Guido Sonnemann (for UNEP, including organisational aspects)
10.30h Start of Life Cycle Inventory part; Greg Norris; half hour presentation, 1 hour discussion.
12.00h Coffee
12.30h Start of Life Cycle Impact Assessment part; Olivier Jolliet; half hour presentation, 1 hour discussion
14.00h Spanish Lunch (to organised by everybody independently) and coffee
16.00h Start of Life Cycle Management part; Konrad Saur; half hour presentation, 1 hour discussion
17.30h Final discussion

We will provide you with further information on the workshop in due course. Please, start registration now for the workshop by replying to this email.

Moreover, in case you have not sent it, please find an application form for your expression of interest in the UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative. If you are interested in participating in future work with the initative, please send an email with the application form to [log in to unmask] by November 15, 2002.

After the creation of the definition study draft author teams and the peer review groups, the Life Cycle Initiative continues to look for volunteers who want to contribute to future activities. Current opportunities for participation include becoming a member of the supporting group or the working groups.

* Member of the supporting group
The initiative will have one supporting group. Members of this group will regularly receive information about the ongoing work, can comment on draft documents and will be invited for workshops.

* Member of the working groups
The initiative consists of three programmes: the LCM, the LCI and the LCIA programmes. Each of these programmes will have a working group of about 30 persons. The main task of these formally installed working groups is to give advice on the draft documents before these are handed over to the highest authority of the initiative, the International Life Cycle Panel. The working groups will consist of a limited number of experts and maintain a stakeholder and geographical balance.

The expression of interest form is also available on the Initiative website,
http://www.uneptie.org/pc/sustain/lca/lca.htm

Thank you in advance for your interest in the Life Cycle Initiative and I apologise for any cross-postings.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,
Guido Sonnemann

Secretariat of the Life Cycle Initiative
