On September 5, at 5:00 p.m., the Institute of Communitarian Policy
Studies will release the report "American Society in the Age of
Terrorism," by Amitai Etzioni.
"American Society in the Age of Terrorism" is an extensive analysis of
data gathered on sociological changes in a post-September 11 American
society. The report addresses findings that show that Americans have:
1. Become more committed to family -- and not just in lip service.
2. Become more spiritual -- but not more active in organized religion.
3. Remained tolerant of people who are different -- including Muslim
Americans.
4. Expressed great interest in volunteerism, though this interest is
being dissipated due to insufficient opportunities.
5. Shown stronger feelings toward nation and community than toward
political parties or religious groups, and are expressing higher levels of
patriotism.
You are invited to attend "American Society in the Wake of Terrorism:
Communitarian Perspectives," an event to introduce the report in The
Zenger Room at The National Press Club at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5.
The panelists, David Brooks (Senior Editor, The Weekly Standard), Amitai
Etzioni (University Professor, George Washington University), Seema Nayyar
(Editor, American Demographics), and Alan Wolfe (Director of the Boisi
Center for Religion and American Public Life, Boston College) will address
the report and the considerable legal, social, and political developments
in the United States in the year after September 11.
