Greg and socrel list,
I seldom contribute but I love the discussion - well, here is a blatant
advertisement.
First, the ARDA site is an incredible resource for old survey data -mostly
about religion in the US and Canada. At the site you can analyze the data
sets or you can download the entire file to your computer to play till your
quantitative heart's content. This is great for teaching stats courses. The
best feature of the site, however, is the fact that the Glenmary Church
membership data is available online for all the counties in the US for 1980
and 1990 - and soon after it is released (tomorrow) the 2000 data. I use
this section of their site nearly every week.
If you all were subscribed to the Hartford Institute for Religion Research
electronic newsletter this site would not be a surprise. :-)
Here is the link to one of our past newsletters about great religion data

If you haven't visited the Hartford Institute site and you study religion,
ok we are biased toward religion in the US - what can I say I'm a
nationalistic snob, you really should check out the collection of sociology
of religion links and resources we offer.
This page lists most of the religion Centers and Institutes in the US
http://hirr.hartsem.edu/sociology/sociology_research_centers.html
This page offers many links to great resources for religion data.

We have also just put up a huge searchable bibliography of SR works at
http://bib.library.hartsem.edu/
We also host Robert Bellah's home page at
http://hirr.hartsem.edu/Bellah/index.html
And in the coming months we will be posting Alta Mira's entire Encyclopedia
of Religion and Society (1998) edited by Bill Swatos.
We also have sections of resources and articles on the study of religious
organizations, homosexuality, megachurches, church growth, religion and the
Internet, Family, Pentecostalism, and church leader resources.
Additionally, we have the full text of several out of print Institute books
such as Church and Denominational Growth: What Does (and does not) Cause
Growth or Decline (1993) Edited by David A. Roozen and C. Kirk Hadaway and
the Handbook of Congregational Studies (1986) Edited by Jackson W. Carroll,
Carl S. Dudley, William McKinney
Sorry to get carried away, but it is a great resource, one which we have
worked very hard to make available to the world. Please use it. Thanks!
Scott Thumma
