Colleagues with an interest in social security, welfare rights or social inclusion/anti-poverty policy issues will probably have noticed that earlier this year, following its tenth anniversary, the journal 'Benefits' was re-launched and re-invigorated. It is still produced by an independent editorial board for an audience that includes not only social policy academics, but also welfare rights practitioners (in both the public and voluntary sectors). However, it is now published and marketed by The Policy Press. This change has already succeeded in giving the journal an increased profile and circulation.
In addition to a group of articles commissioned around a theme, each issue of the journal will normally also carry at least one uncommissioned article that need not relate to any particular theme. 'Benefits' is a refereed journal and all articles are subject to academic peer-review.
We are always pleased to receive offers of articles on any subject likely to be of interest to our readers, especially when based on recent research. 'Benefits' provides an opportunity to communicate new research findings and ideas to a diverse audience. Remembering that the journal is read by practitioners as well as academics, articles should be short (up to a maximum of 3000 words) and accessible. They should be of a rigorous scholarly standard, but avoid the use of inappropriate technical detail and unnecessary bibliographical references.
Proposed articles (preferably three hard copies in the first instance) may be sent to me at the address shown below. Alternatively, I am very happy to discuss ideas or suggestions for articles with prospective contributors.
