The really good biographies--Anne Somerset's is my favorite--are long and not
cheap. I've had good luck using J.E. Neale with undergraduates. He's
wonderfully lively and engages students by stressing the many personal and
political challenges that the Queen faced and overcame. He's a bit dated, and
seems suspiciously celebratory to cynical age like our own, but he teaches
well.
