1 SYMPOSIUM: COMPETING FOR SPACE - 26 September 2002
The University of Southampton will be hosting the 2nd Symposium to mark
the European Day of Languages at the Avenue Campus on Thursday 26
September 2002. There is still a limited number of places available. The event
is free but there will be a small charge for lunch.  To register on-line please

3. ONLINE RESOURCES AND TOOLS FOR LANGUAGES AND
EUROPEAN STUDIES -
University of Coventry 16 September 02
A Subject Centre Workshop has been organised in collaboration with
Coventry University's Centre for Information Technology in Language Learning
(CITLL) 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM.   The programme includes sessions on creating
online exercises for languages using Hot Potatoes and a presentation on
online Resources in European Studies.  There will also be a hands on
session with the tools and resources demonstrated.  This event is open to all

4. CURRICULUM 2000 - ITS IMPACT ON ADMISSIONS POLICIES AND THE
HE
CURRICULUM - 11 October 2002, Open University, London
Changes in the take up of languages at AS and A2 level, as well as changes
in the pre- and post-16 language curriculum will impact on the level, content
and structure of language courses offered by HE modern languages
departments.

At this event, there will be speakers from QCA (Qualifications and Curriculum
Authority), UCAS, CILT and the Subject Centre.  We also hope to bring you
Keith Marshall's latest data on admissions and on take up of languages at
AS/A2 level.  We would encourage each department to send an admissions
officer to this workshop as there will be opportunities for discussion and
sharing of strategies and concerns.  For more information, go to:

5. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT PLANS WORKSHOP 5 December, British
Council
There will be a Subject Centre event focussing on the HE progress file
(recommended for general introduction by 2005 -see
http://www.recordingachievement.org <http://www.recordingachievement.org>
), personal development planning (PDP) and the development of key skills on
5 December at the British Council, Spring Gardens, London. Many
colleagues are already involved in developments this area and we hope to
continue to gather examples of good practice - apologies if you have offered
further information and we have not contacted you over the summer. You
might also be interested in a conference being held on 17 September at the
University of Nottingham by the Internet-Pars project which examines the link
between the progress file and Continuing Professional Development (

6. LWULT LANGUAGES - Mini-Project funding available
A Subject centre workshop being held at CILT on Friday 1 November will
focus on how best to disseminate good practice in lesser widely taught
languages. Following the workshop there will be an invitation to bid for mini-
projects. Details will be publicised in future e-bulletins and on the web.

7. SUBJECT CENTRE INSTITUTIONAL VISITS
The Subject Centre carries out a number of institutional visits to UK HE
institutions. Member(s) of Subject Centre staff (and if necessary colleagues
with expertise in a specific area) visit institutions to deliver staff development
workshops tailored to meet local needs.  This service is free of charge
although we ask that the host institution provides lunch/refreshments. We are
limited to the number of visits we are able to make each year. If you would
like us to visit your institution, please contact Janet Bartle

preferred dates and possible topics you would like us to cover.

8. NUFFIELD LANGUAGES INQUIRY FINAL REPORT
Copies of the Nuffield Languages Inquiry Final Report entitled "Languages:
the next generation" as well as CD's and copies of the original consultation
document are available from the Nuffield Foundation. If you are interested in
