Research assistant for the project Understanding pronouns in Finnish,

University of Dundee
Salary: £17,626 - £19,681
Reference No. ASS/801/1
The position
The position is a 12-13 month fixed-term contract to work on the project
Understanding pronouns in Finnish at the University of Turku, Finland
(exact duration depending on salary level). The project provides an
excellent opportunity for a researcher with interests in psycholinguistics
to conduct experimental research to investigate the comprehension of pronouns.
The project
The aim of the project is to investigate theories about how language users
understand pronouns. We will employ a new methodology, which involves the
recording of eye movements to visual scenes while people listen to
sentences containing ambiguous pronouns. Theories of pronoun resolution
make different assumptions about the strategies that people use to
interpret pronouns that are ambiguous in context. In languages with a
fixed word order such as English, it is often very difficult to
discriminate between the different theories. In the project, we will
investigate Finnish, because its word order is extremely free. This will
enable us to investigate various untested hypotheses about strategies that
people use to interpret ambiguous pronouns.
Job description
The research assistant will construct materials, conduct eye-movement
experiments and analyse data for a number of studies investigating the
comprehension of pronouns. The research assistant will also be involved in
writing up the experiments and their publication. The assistant will be
based at the University of Turku (Finland) and will work directly with Dr
Jukka Hyönä and Dr Raymond Bertram. The project will be directed by Dr
Roger van Gompel (University of Dundee, UK). Travel and subsistence funds
are available for travel between the Universities of Turku and Dundee.
The Department of Psychology at the University of Turku
The Department of Psychology provides an excellent environment and
first-class facilities for conducting research. The Department has very
recently moved to a new building. The major areas of research interest
include psycholinguistics, cognitive neuroscience, learning and reading
difficulties, traffic psychology, aggressive behaviour, cognitive and
social development, and visual cognition. Attached to the Department are
two interdisciplinary research units, Centre for Cognitive Neuroscience and
Centre for Learning Research. The Department has 4 professors, 8
lecturers, and about 50 other staff members (including the two research
centres). Psycholinguistics is one of the Department's main areas of
interest, and several of the staff work in this area. The language
processing research group has a state-of-the-art lab devoted to eye
movement research (EyeLink II). The department also has excellent
computing facilities and support.
University of Turku is the oldest and the second largest university in
