Our unit 6 results were also disappointing - students who got grade a
overall achieving a grade D etc.
I feel we focused too much on the syllabus and not enough on developing
decision making and evaluation. It was my first year teaching the A2 and I
the strategies that have been successful on AS, 4 students got 300/300 this
summer, (basically taught evaluation) were enough to achieve level 3( in
fairness to the chief examiner, I have been to inset where he has said as
much!)
I have spoken to collegues in other centres who changed their teaching
strategy after the u4 in january and got good results on paper 6
I have already started this year differently and will be much more focused
on large cases and decision making from the off.
On a brighter note
We have however put 3 students papers forward for remarks. All increased on
paper 5 by 21 ums, 22ums and 12 ums respectively! AQA are now remarking all
the scripts. One of the students had a paper 4 remarked in january which
went from a D to an A, paper 5 from 63 ums to 86 and paper 6 up 12 ums -
changing her overall grade from a B to an A.
As regards paper 6, I would not be surprised if it is not similar to what
has happened with psych' A level in my centre. The coursework marks are all
over the place and it has been suggested in the national press that this is
to bring down the overall performance as students performed too well at AS.
1 raw mark is equivalent to 5 ums - you can see how predicted grades can go
out of the window.
Sorry to bore on!!
