Research in Economics and Business Education

Natural places to look for research papers on economics and business
education are: Journal of Economic Education (U.S. mainly focused on
undergraduate), Children's Social and Economic Education (no longer
published), Economic Awareness (No longer published) and Economia
(From the Association for European Economics Education - no longer
published) and of course Teaching Business and Economics and its
predecessors. A small amount of research on our subject area is
published in general education journals when the topics are of wider
interest. A number are listed below:

Learning Outcomes

Dahlgren, L-O (1984) Outcomes of Learning, in F. Marton, D. Hounsell
and N. Entwistle (Eds.) The Experience of Learning (Edinburgh:
Scottish Academic Press). - summary of phemonenographic approach to
defining outcomes of learning in economics.
McEwen, A., McGuinness, C. and Knipe, D. (2001) Teaching and cognitive
outcomes in A-levels and advanced GNVQs: case studies from science and
business studies classrooms, Research Papers in Education, 16(2):199 -
222 - recent study highly relevant to the development of thinking
skills in business studies
Wood, K. (2000) The experience of learning to teach: changing student
teachers' ways of understanding teaching. Journal of Curriculum
Studies. 32(1): 75-93. - application of phenomenography to the
identification of conceptions of 'teaching' amongst trainee teachers
of economics and business studies.
Stock, P.A. and Rader, W.D. (1997) Level of Economic Understanding for
Senior High School Students in Ohio, Journal of Educational Research,
91,1: 60-63.
Salemi, M. and Siegfried, J. (1999) The state of economic education,
American Economic Review, 89(2): 355-361.
Walstad, W. and Allgood, S. (1999) What do College Seniors know about
Economics? American Economic Review, 89(2): 350-354. - each of the
last three focusing on outcomes of economics education in the U.S.
Meyer, J.H.F. and Shanahan. M.P. (2001a). A triangulated approach to
the modeling of learning outcomes in first year economics. Higher
Education Research & Development, 20; 2: 127-145.
Meyer, J.H.F. and Shanahan. M.P. (2001b). On variation in conceptions
of 'price' in economics. Higher Education, forthcoming. Last two are
technical papers which start from a phenomenographic base and then
attempt a statistical analysis of patterns in students' thinking.

Citizenship Education

Davies, I. (1998) Economic and Monetary Union: Issues Relating to
Education for Citizenship, Evaluation and Research in Education, 12,3:
153-166.
Davies, I. (2001) Enterprising citizens? Perceptions of citizenship
education and enterprise education in England and Hungary. Educational
Review. 53(3): 261-269. - Ian Davies has written a great deal on
Citizenship and these two papers address aspects of the interaction
between Citizenship education and business and economics education.
Davies, P. (2001) Economic Understanding and Citizenship in England,
in Schlösser, H.G. (ed.) Stand und Entwicklung der ökonomischen
Bildung Bergisch Gladbach: Verlag Thomas Holbein).
Davies, P. (2002) Principals or Agents? Developing Citizenship through
Business, Economics and Financial Education, Online Journal for Social
Sciences and their Didactics 1/2002 http://www.sowi-online.de
- last two present theoretical reviews of the place of business and
economics education within secondary education. The SOWI paper
includes a commentary on the Howard Davies' review.
Davies, P. (2002) Howie, H., Mangan, J. and Telhaj, S. (2002) Economic
aspects of citizenship education: an investigation of students'
understanding, The Curriculum Journal, 13(2): 227-249. - report of an
empirical investigation of students' thinking about the economic
aspects of citizenship.

Curriculum Development

school curriculum, The Curriculum Journal 10(1): 11-28. Reports an
empirical study of business studies departments and how the curriculum
changed 1986-1998 - something of a counter to Williams and Yeomans.
Davies, P., Adnett, N. and Turnbull, A. (2002)Market forces and
diversity: some evidence from the 14-19 curriculum, Journal of
Curriculum Studies (forthcoming)- Empirical study of curriculum change
