Hello Sarah
You might clarify an important point in your question. When you say that in
your qualitative research last year, you found that participants were unable
to speak about their disabilities. Do you mean that in conducting
interviews, it was difficult to get particants to disclose information about
their disabilities OR do you mean that the difficulty in speaking about
their disabilities was the object of your inquiry? The answer affects what I
would understand a self-silencing questionnaire to be. I have not heard the
term before.
If as I suspect, the latter is the case, then I would be interested to know
more about the questionnaire too. I would like to see if it has relevance to
the self-disclosure of non-visible disability.
Best regards

HI, I am on a doctorate in counselling psychology as part of this I HAVE to
undertake a piece of quantatative research. Last year in my qualitative
piece I found that my participants felt largely unable to speak about their
disabilities , or at least only in certain ways.
I have come across a self silencing questionnaire, which although I have
not had a chance to investigate yet I thought it may enable me to expand
the theme in my qual. work into my quan. work. So far I have only found it
being used to research eating disorders, abuse and depression. I wondered
if anyone had ever come across it being used in research with disabled
people? cheers, Sarah Supple.
