Looking for an AAG session: Seeing the State
From: Stuart Corbridge (London School of Economics and University of Miami), Glyn Williams (Keele University), Rene Veron (University of
Guelph), and Manoj Srivastava (London School of Economics)
We are looking for an AAG session at which to present our results of recent research on governance and the spatiality of post-colonial
state. Our research - based around an extensive programme of fieldwork in Eastern India - addresses these issues from two inter-locking
perspectives. First, it focuses on how people - and in particular the rural poor - experience the state in its various modes, from its
'developmental' activities to its enforcement of law and order, and their strategies for encountering or avoiding 'it'. Second, it looks the
ways in which the ambitions of those 'in power' at the higher reaches of the state are re-interpreted through the actions of their
grassroots operatives and other power-brokers. Focusing on the spatiality, experience and representation of state power, our work looks
critically at a range of debates (around decentralisation, governance, participation, political capabilities, and the nature of the
post-colonial state) important within political geography, development geography and geographies of South Asia.
