Hi all,
I share an office with new EC-funded project DIOGENE; you may be
interested in what they are doing, so I agreed to post a brief blurb on
the project. Project researchers will be joining the relevant SIGs to
discuss problems and issues.

DIOGENE, an EC 5th framework funded project, aims to design and
implement a self-learning Web environment able to support individuals
from the definition of objectives to the assessment of the results
through to the construction of custom, self-adaptive courses. The system
will be accessible through the Web and will take the form of a training
portal used by teachers and learners in Information & Communications
Technologies (ICT). Materials will include not-for-free courses
generated by partners within DIOGENE, and by utilising the semantic web
and traditional keyword based information retrieval techniques we hope
to also enable the integration and use of wider web-based resources. A
main element of the project is the use of metadata and ontologies to
describe learners, teachers, and learning objects, allowing free-lance
teachers, for example, to describe their abilities in a machine readable
manner. The portal will provide individual profiles for learners and
teachers, and provide a single co-operative environment to support
communication and social interactions between the various participants,
potentially also allowing a richer use of user and learner modeling
techniques. The evaluation of DIOGENE is intended to take place in a
life like setting, with real users, to gauge the impact on learning
efficiency and flexibility.
Areas of interest to the project include:
- ontologies and the semantic web, including the mapping between
ontologies
- metadata standards for learning object packaging and interoperability
- user and student modeling systems and associated learning strategies
- knowledge representation systems for describing learning objects
- the integration of fuzzy keyword based information retrieval
techniques
