I think most of the FT ads invite those who are only able to work PT to
apply.
I was successfully appointed to a PT post in the UK this year. In Australia,
it's not uncommon for emergency physicians to hold at least 2 posts - in 2
EDs, or one ED, one retrieval/ICU/hyperbaric medicine or whatever specialist
interest they have. It seems to be a healthy and sustainable way to work,
and I thought this would be a good 'anti-burnout' strategy. I applied with
another interested 'part-timer' as a package, and we were the only 2
candidates short-listed. Nevertheless the interview was an excrutiating
ordeal spent justifying this intended 'bizarre' work pattern to 5 of the 7
panel members, who wanted to know how it could possibly work and exactly
what I intended to be doing the rest of the week (in my own time!). We were
both asked to accept the FT post during our interviews! I've no idea how
many breaches of employment law there were during the interview, but we were
left feeling rather hard done by.
Our case was strengthened by applying together, leaving no 'gaps' to fill.
However it's a seller's market and my advice is to apply for the job on your
terms. If you're female it will probably not be seen to be quite as weird,
but our experience suggests there are some incredibly old-fashioned
attitudes still out there. We are decades behind.
Can't see how someone only willing to do weekends and evenings wouldn't be
welcomed with open arms anywhere though!
Good luck.
