I'm afraid I sin. My mobile is always on except in aircraft where I cannot talk to the pilot (i.e. commercials; the helicopter guys don't
mind in the slightest). My rationale for this is that I used to hate trying to get my Consultant; you'd either irritate his wife while he
was out playing golf etc or you would page him and wait an uncomfortable 20 minutes for him to ring back. That was not fun, as
you tended to delay a bit in case things settled, and inevitably they didn't.
With a mobile I tell the guys that I am very easy to get. They pick up the bendy thing attached to the curly wire and press the
button marked '0'. They ask for me and within seconds we are speaking. Guaranteed not to be on a golf course, incidentally.
What happens if a machine packs up in Resus for whatever reason? Who cares; it's my job to look after the patient. If something
goes wrong with a machine I can quite readily take over with eyes and ears and fingers.
Best wishes,
Rowley Cottingham
