italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Dear list,
I've come across an otherwise light-hearted sixteenth century song (a villotta
alla padoana) which refers to hanging. I'm wondering which crimes would have
been punished by hanging in Venice and the Veneto (specifically Vicenza) during
the sixteenth century (around 1557)? I'm guessing treason and certain sexual
crimes (sodomy), but I haven't been able to find out for certain. I'd be
grateful if anyone could help out, either by confirming or denying my hunches,
or suggesting possible sources of this information.
Thanks for any help,
Melanie
