Why are disability studies units, programmes, and research groups
aligning themselves in these ways with large financial institutions
and multinational corporations?
>>>
Because they have the money to fund research. (I'll reply for Deborah
Stienstra; I don't know her but I know about her and I know she could
have had a fine career in political science without changing direction
to engage in disaibility research.)
And so we sup with the devil -- our publishers, too, are commercial
operations.
>>>
Where in disability studies is the interrogation of the IMF, World
Bank, etc. that is proliferating in other critical domains of both the
"grassroots" and academic spheres?
>>>
I don't know. But I think you'll find that every field where such
interrogation occurs also has chairs funded by -- for example -- the
Royal Bank of Canada (the funding body, I assume, for this Chair).

I think at this historical juncture, those engaged in/with a vested
interest (of any kind) in disability studies must critically examine
this increasing co-optation and globalization of of disability
activism, movements, etc. Why are disability studies units,
programmes, and research groups aligning themselves in these ways with
large financial institutions and multinational corporations? Where in
disability studies is the interrogation of the IMF, World Bank, etc.
that is proliferating in other critical domains of both the
"grassroots" and academic spheres?

The Canadian Centre on Disability Studies is a consumer directed,
university-affiliated Centre which responds to global disability needs
and

their chosen advocates in their communities - national and
international.
The Centre, which is in a period of rapid expansion employs 12 staff
people,
has a budget of over a million dollars, and works with a number of

activities
include having completed over 50 research projects, now involved in

received
funding from governments, foundations, World Bank and Asian
Development
Bank.
