Canadian Centre on Disability Studies
The Canadian Centre on Disability Studies is a consumer directed,
university-affiliated Centre which responds to global disability needs and
promotes and conducts research and education on disability issues. The
Centre’s activities promote the presence, participation, accessibility and
self-determination of all persons with disabilities, their families and
their chosen advocates in their communities - national and international.
The Centre, which is in a period of rapid expansion employs 12 staff people,
has a budget of over a million dollars, and works with a number of
universities across Canada including Ryerson, Laval, the University of
Winnipeg and Manitoba. CCDS works as the hub of a multi-department research
network at the U of M, where a Masters in Disability Studies degree will
accept students in the fall of 2003. Other examples of CCDS’s activities
include having completed over 50 research projects, now involved in research
projects with the World Bank and Asian Development Bank, and have an active
international program in Russia and Ukraine. CCDS recently published a
nationally recognized handbook on Home-based Employment and has received
funding from governments, foundations, World Bank and Asian Development
Bank.
The Position
The Royal Bank Research Chair in Disability Studies is a three-year
renewable term position. The person will be employed by the Centre, and may
also be appointed at one of the universities the Centre is affiliated with.
The salary range is negotiable, depending on qualifications and experience.
The location of the appointment is negotiable, with the preference being the
Centre offices in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Qualifications
Applications are invited from individuals who hold a Ph.D. Individuals
should be committed to the study of cross disability issues within an
interdisciplinary framework. Suitable candidates will have the ability to
present research findings to a number of audiences, including people with
disabilities, the academic and non-academic communities, government and
non-government organizations, and industry. The successful candidate will
have a demonstrated ability to obtain external research funding and to
maintain a program of research leading to publication in refereed journals.
The Centre is especially interested in candidates who have an understanding
of both quantitative and qualitative research as well as a commitment to
consumer participation in research. A personal connection to the disability
community and the ability to communicate in both English and French would be
assets. We encourage applications from qualified women and men, including
members of visible minorities, aboriginal peoples, and persons with

Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating the research
activities of the Centre. This will include serving as a principal
investigator, acting as a resource and point of contact for other
researchers and possibly an advisory to graduate students. The Research
Chair will be expected to actively pursue research funding and to establish
interdisciplinary and community linkages. CCDS is interested in a broad
range of disability related research issues including employment, gender,
technology, youth and children, universal design, economics, policy,
international issues and aboriginal people.
