A BIOLOGICAL AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC ASSESSMENT OF THE
CONSEQUENCES OF AN AGEING POPULATION
A MAJOR ONE-DAY CONFERENCE
organised by the National Institute of Economic and Social Research
& the Institute of Psychiatry, Kings’ College London
Thursday 23 January 2003 • 9.30am - 5.00pm
Venue: The British Academy, Carlton House Terrace, London SW1
The purpose of this conference is to promote multidisciplinary discussion of ageing by
bringing together biological research on epidemiology, life-spans and ageing disorders
and an assessment of the economic and social changes which are associated with
these. It follows the thread the full way from the biological basis of the ageing process
to their economic and social implications and thus helps researchers and practitioners
in the field gain a perception of the likely evolution of ageing and the social and
economic consequences thereof.
The organisers:
The conference is jointly organised by the Institute of Psychiatry and the National
Institute of Economic and Social Research. The Institute of Psychiatry, Kings College
London, was rated 5* in the current and previous research assessment exercises and
has strong research groups in neurodegeneration and mental health of the elderly.
The National Institute of Economic and Social Research, has built up a strong
reputation for its research into the ageing population, with its work being supported by
bodies such as the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), HM Treasury and the
National Association of Pension Funds. During 2001/2 it has run a highly successful
seminar series funded by the ESRC on the “The Economics of Population Change”.
The conference:
This conference will begin with an account of current research into ageing processes.
This will be followed by a survey of current epidemiological trends and their social and
budgetary implications. This will then lead into a specific account of Alzheimer’s
Disease and an assessment of different methods of paying for long-term care of the
elderly.
