The following message from Antonia Boström:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Colleagues,
I am delighted to inform you that two special sessions have been accepted
at the 38th International Congress on Medieval Studies at Western Michigan
University, Kalamazoo, in May 8-11, 2003. The titles of the complementary
sessions are:
With and Without the Medici (2):
I. The Medici, their Courtiers, and the Florentine "Opposition in Exile"
II. Art and Culture at the Courts of Europe between 1530 and 1630.
The proposed sessions would seek to address and expand on many of the
themes to be covered in the major international loan exhibition
“Magnificenza: the Medici, Michelangelo and late Renaissance Art in
Florence”, which will be on show at the Detroit Institute of Arts (March
16- June 8, 2003), after its Florence and Chicago venues in 2002 and 2003.
Its dates run concurrently with the Medieval Institute’s 38th International
Congress.
These sessions will allow a forum for the discussion of issues relating to
courtly and patrician patronage, especially comparing and contrasting the
collecting and patronage of the grand-ducal Medici family with other
families and dynasties within Italy and elsewhere in Europe; to the
dissemination of artistic practices and styles around Europe, due to
strategic marriages and political alliances, as well as through prints and
itinerant artists; to the development of state-run manufactories; and to
scientific and botanical interests.
We hope that attendees will use the opportunity of visiting the exhibition
before or during the time of the 38th Congress, and bring to the sessions
issues and questions to discuss in a more open forum that have been raised
by the exhibition. In addition, these sessions would present a context in
which to present current research and address subjects which broaden the
range of topics covered in the exhibition and its accompanying catalogue.
I am urging potential speakers to consult the Call for Papers website for
the 38th Congress for detailed information about submission of abstracts,
audio-visual needs, and accommodation and travel information. Please
consult this at: http://www.wmich.edu/medieval
As you will read there, EACH abstract submitted for consideration for
inclusion in the 38th Congress must be accompanied by a completed ABSTRACT
COVER SHEET. All abstract submissions must be turned in by SEPTEMBER 15,
2002, to the contact person (myself) for Special Sessions. Complete this
sheet and attach it to the front of your abstract.
Please share this information with colleagues and interested parties.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Antonia Boström
