italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Dear colleagues,
this may well be only of interest to European (particularly UK) university lecturers, but I thought it worth publicizing.
The general public of this country (Great Britain) needs a drastic change in its attitude to foreign language acquisition; fewer and fewer high school pupils study a language, and it is increasingly easy for them to avoid it altogether after the age of 14.
This helps explain why almost every language department in almost every British university has spent the past two weeks -- high school results were announced two weeks ago -- begging for students to sign up for their language degrees.
Anyway, here it is!
Best wishes,
George

European Day of Languages
Speak up for languages!
26 September is the European Day of Languages
It will be a day
- for encouraging people of all ages to start learning a new

- to take part in events celebrating learning and speaking other
languages
- to focus on the benefits that language learning brings
The European Day of Languages has been established as an annual
event, as a result of the enthusiasm with which it was celebrated
during 2001, the European Year of Languages, and the need to continue to develop
language capability across Europe.
