italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
The Making of a Literary Translation
Organised by the Cultural Institutes and Embassies of France,
Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain in collaboration with the
British Centre for Literary Translation and the Translators' Association
Sunday 22 and Monday 23 September 2002
at the Voice Box, Royal Festival Hall, London SE1 8XX
For the third time, the British Centre for Literary Translation
and the Translators' Association have joined forces with several
European Cultural Institutes and Embassies to organise a two-day programme of
talks, readings and panel discussions addressing the art of literary
translation. The conference will be rounded off with the St Jerome Lecture which
will be delivered this year by New York-based writer and human rights
activist Susan Sontag. The evening will also feature a prize-giving to
outstanding translators.
The conference programme includes bi-lingual readings from the
books of six European writers whose English translators will be awarded a
prize following the St Jerome Lecture. One of the prize-winning translators who
will be reading on this occasion is Anthea Bell, who has been selected
as the recipient of the 2002 Schlegel-Tieck Prize for her exceptional
translation of W.G. Sebald's novel Austerlitz (2001). Anthea Bell was born in
Suffolk, studied at Oxford, and has worked as a translator for a number
of years, primarily from German and French. She has translated fiction as
well as non-fiction. Her numerous previous translation awards include the
1987 Schlegel-Tieck Prize.
