The Library of the Law Faculty in Prague plans to substitute the losses
with digitizations (see appeal below). Would'nt it a good idea that
digitizations projects could help the library by digitizating books and
- if they are not copyrighted - to make them available for the general
public in the web?

[BIB-JUR] Help for the Library of the Law Faculty in Prague (Klaus Graf

Please feel free to forward the following:

"In August 2002", writes a summary from the Charles University in Prag
at

http://www.cuni.cz/cuni/povodne/povodne.html#zprava_14

"the Czech Republic was struck by a natural calamity of enormous
intensity. [...] The first estimate of related damage throughout the
Czech Republic moves in the range of tens of billions CZK
(so far, these run to more than 3 billion USD) and the planned
restoration will last for several months. [...] This calamity has
touched also the Charles University in Prague. [...]
The single building which houses the Faculty of Law is located directly
on the Vltava embankment. Its library, containing more than 100,000
titles stands in ruin, and while all efforts are being directed to the
preservation of at least some of the affected publications, the majority
of these can be replaced only with great difficulty."

A German article describes the library losses of the Faculty of Law:

FLOODS APPEAL

Call for financial assistance

The premises of the Law Faculty of Charles University in Prague, Czech
Republic, were damaged during the
unprecedented floods when one third of the country
was covered with two hundred years flood water; the
Czech Republic suffered enormous damage amounting
up to ninety billions Czech crowns.

The Vltava river substantially affected central
parts of the City of Prague including Charles University.

The Library of the Law School, the largest law
library in the Czech Republic, has lost about one hudred
thousand law books, journals, historical law
materials, etc. particularly from the period between 1918 and
1948. The basement and subbasement at the Law
Faculty, where the seat of the Library and its storages are
located, were damaged and flooded with almost 2
metres of penetrating river water.

The damage caused to the building and the Library
is expected to amount to several millions of Czech
                     crowns.

We are calling law schools and universities as well as other
institutions or individuals all over the world for
financial help and support - the situation is very serious.

We have to urgently restore primarily Czech acquisitions of the library
and the premises so that the academic
year could start as soon as possible and students
could prepare for their exams. Repairs in the building and
reconstruction of Library acquisitions will take
many months and even years. The collected money will be
used to restore the damaged books, materials and
premises, and to complete the library funds. Books that
are irretrievably lost are to be acquired in a
digitalized (electronic) format.

Any amount of money will be gratefully welcomed.
Unfortunately, we are unable to accept any material donations such as
books.

Many thanks in advance to all friends of the Law Faculty of Charles
University in Prague.

Prof. Dr. Vladimír KINDL
Dean
