I have to admit I was surprised when it was

I agree they should remain, if only because it could be important to have
historical documents available, especially if one has to work with a legacy
system (perhaps to update it to comply with the new documents, perhaps for
some other purpose). Good Specs never die, they just gently become
obsoleted.
I also agree that it is good to have a split between "user-friendly"
documentation and technical documentation. Not only does this make things
easier for the newbies (and with DC I'm only just leaving the newbie zone
myself), but also prevents the temptations to make the normative documents
overly simple for the sake of newbies amongst their audience. Whether the
previous set of documents is best suited for this purpose is another
question though.
Ah well, more added on the must-read pile. I totally wasted my money buying
a book of plays last month, I'll never get around to them.
