Dear Hilary
I would like to offer the following for the 7th November one day event:
`Outdoor rooms for the Poor: The Kyrle Society, Open Spaces and Clean Air.
The mission of the Kyrle Society, named after Pope's Man of Ross
(Herefordshire) who gave all his money to the poor, was to 'Bring beauty
Home to the Poor '. Conceived by Miranda Hill in 1876, the Kyrle wasa
national body by 1882 with Prince Leopold, the Queen's youngest son, as its
president. Very much a middle class organisation, in terms of its
activists, the Kyrle relied on royal and arstocratic support. The Kyrle
had three main branches- Open Spaces, very much the province of Octavia
Hill, the Decorative Branch and the Book Distribution. This paper will
look at the work of the Open Spaces branch, its links with the Commons
Preservation Committee and Octavia Hill's activity in this area. One of
the key causes of the Kyrle was clean air and this is another aspect of
their work that will be included.
Thanks
