5.2
Ideas in Cyberspace Education Symposium
Higham Hall, Lake District
30 October to 1 November 2002

Registration for the ICE symposium is now open. You can register
online at: http://mcdept.qmuc.ac.uk/ice

The emergence of the internet has introduced some fundamental
challenges to the ways in which we understand notions of identity,
community, knowledge itself. Cyberspace theory of recent years has
provided fascinating insights into the changes we are experiencing
culturally, socially and politically as a result of our shift online.
These insights tend, however, to be under-represented in our
explorations of the effects on education of using the new
technologies.

The aim of the symposium is to provide an opportunity to engage in a
re-examination of educational experiences in cyberspace. The keynote
speaker will be Mark Poster, author of The Information Subject and
What's the Matter with the Internet?

Further details are available from the symposium web site.

Numbers are limited, so please book early!

Ref: RF-2002/2003-2
Closing Date: 31 Aug, 2002

The University of Hong Kong is at the international forefront of
higher learning and research, with more than 100 teaching departments
and sub-divisions of studies, and more than 60 research institutes
and centres. Current enrollment includes 10,000 undergraduates and
7,000 postgraduates from 48 countries. English is the medium of

for excellence in scholarship and research.

The appointment will initially be made on a fixed-term basis of two

The University is seeking a dedicated individual to co-ordinate the

IT needs of students, teachers, researchers and administrators. In
this connection, the appointee will work closely with several heads
of academic services: principally the Computer Centre and the
University Libraries, but also the University Museum and Art Gallery,
and the Hong Kong University Press. The position requires outstanding
communication, team working and interpersonal skills, and knowledge
of state-of-the-art applications of IT in the education arena,
especially higher education.

Annual salaries [attracting contract-end gratuity and University
contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of
basic salary] for Professor/Associate Professor are on the following
scales (which are subject to review from time to time in accordance
with the University's established mechanism), with the starting

appropriate, a taxable financial subsidy under the Home Financing
Scheme for reimbursing either the actual rental payment or the
mortgage repayment up to the relevant maximum entitlement.
