Rather late in the day for a response, but on 5th
October 2001, Judith Flanders posted the following to
the mailbase:
"I have just read that Kipling advertised Bovril at
some point. Is this so? I
had never heard it before.
Best
Judith Flanders"
Eleven months later I have just come across something
that is probably the source for this, though not an
advert.
In part 1 of his Boer War article "No2. Folly Bridge"
(Daily Express, 15 June 1900) RK writes "They worked
day and night, and of course they wanted more than
service rations, so their commandant, Phil Tenbroek -
he's a big mine manager when he's at home - bought a
lot of bovril and pea-meal, and made a soup of
it....". There is a second reference to this bovril
further on in the article.
With best regards
