POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
NEW YORK, SYRACUSE, 13244-1020. Syracuse University. Full-time tenure track
faculty appointments effective Fall 2003. Rank Open. Ph.D. required although
a doctoral candidate could be appointed contingent on completion of the Ph.D.
by the time of appointment.
The Department of Geography intends to appoint three faculty members who
will contribute to the department and university?s commitment to build a
vibrant physical geography program, and will complement our strengths in
human geography/social theory and environmental geography/political ecology.
We desire a mix of senior and junior faculty committed to innovative research
and excellent teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. A
demonstrated record of excellence in publishing, teaching and advising is
expected for appointment with tenure at the associate or full professor rank.
All appointees will be expected to contribute to introductory courses and
to develop new courses in their area of specialization. Normal teaching responsibilities
for all positions are two courses per semester.
The department is committed to increasing the diversity of its faculty and

Physical Geographer with research interests in atmospheric science, incorporating
GIS, modeling, and/or remote sensing. The successful candidate will teach
introductory courses in GIS and physical geography, and upper-division and
graduate courses in her/his area of expertise. An active role in shaping
and enhancing a growing graduate program in physical geography is expected.
This individual will have opportunities to interact with environmental scientists
in the Geography Department, allied departments at Syracuse University, and
the adjacent SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, and with
at least one additional physical geographer to be hired in the near future.
Human Geographer with research interests in social theory. We specifically
seek a scholar with interests in feminism, race and ethnicity, or political
economy/political theory, who can make critical contributions to department
and Maxwell School initiatives in gender and globalization, citizenship and
governance, social movements, global political economy, conflict resolution
and the interdisciplinary study of space and place. Teaching responsibilities
will include introductory human geography and upper-division and graduate
courses in the candidate?s area of specialization.
Environmental Geographer with a commitment to linking empirical research
and social theory. We are particularly interested in hiring a political
ecologist who can complement existing departmental strengths in international
development, gender, environmental justice, resource use, human dimensions
of global change, and conservation. Syracuse University is committed to
interdisciplinary scholarship on environmental issues, and the successful
candidate will affiliate with the Maxwell School?s Center for Environmental
Policy and Administration. Teaching responsibilities will include one lower-division
environmental geography course, plus upper-division and graduate courses
in area of specialization.
The Syracuse University Department of Geography and the Maxwell School provide
ample opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration for both human and
physical geographers. In addition, we have strong links with faculty and
programs in African-American Studies, Applied Statistics, Architecture, Biology,
Earth Sciences, English and Textual Studies, Environmental Engineering, Landscape
Architecture, the S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, and the
adjacent State University of New York College of Environmental Science and
Forestry.

African Initiative, South Asia Center, Program on Latin America and the Caribbean,
European Union Center, and the Global Affairs Institute.
