"The British Standards Institution (BSI) is working on the following
standard that it expects to publish in 2003
BS8426 A code of practice for e-support in electronic learning systems
BSI is presently seeking expert authors would might wish to be invited
to tender to develop an initial draft for the Standard.
It is expect that tenders will be issued to iinterested parties in early
September 2002, closing in early October. The selected tenderer will be
recommended to the Department of Trade and Industry for funding and if
approved, a contract will be let by the end of October 2002. Work on the
project is expected to be complete by the end of February 2003.
Following this the draft will be issued for Public Comment, and if
accepted by the BSI Technical Committee, IST/43 Information technology
for learning, education and training, the Standard will be published in
the autumn of 2003.
The general content of the Standard will be to define the type and
nature of learner support objects and their interfaces to content
objects in the related fields of CAL, Telematic & eLearning.
A learner is taken to be the learner of an electronic learning system.
eSupport is: a response to a learner, system or tutor interaction when
participating in an eLearning learning or training experience - the
exact situation an place of learning is immaterial.
There is a range of materials which could be considered as providing
support including: simple text-based "help" files, the re-use of
learning materials of a different difficulty level to get a alternative
perspective on the subject, the use of FAQs or email or a newsgroup to
get peer and tutor support as well as the use of web-based search
engines and local indices to retrieve appropriate material to deepen the
learner's understanding.
The Standard will cover:
- Both passive and active learner support provision in training,
education or application software which lead to formal and informal
assessed eLearning
- The provision of a quality assured learner support framework to
facilitate the pedagogic application of e-learning resources and
specifications in the area of content packaging, management and delivery
without adhering to any particular pedagogic approach
- a typology and means to specify: learner support objects, learner
support services and interfaces between learner support, content and
assessment objects
- metadata application to enable the reuse of existing resources to
serve as a learner support resource, e.g. learning objects, bulletin
board or email items
The Standard will exclude but take note of:
- the development of learning or learner support objects or associated
systems - the development of content management, content packaging and
delivery standards - methodologies for the development of e-learning
content and its implementation
The Standard will offer clarity to stakeholders and beneficiaries. It is
expected that the standard will influence other, more general areas of
user support even though they are excluded from the current proposal for
standardization.
