Major areas of work 2002-2003
SWAPltsn is the subject centre for Social Policy and
Social Work - one of 24 discipline-based centres, which
form the UK-wide Learning and Teaching Support
Network (LTSN) with the main aim of promoting high
quality learning, teaching and assessment in our subject
areas.
Our activities include:
· Exchange of good practice
· News service
· Online databases
· Easy access to relevant websites
· Online discussion
· Learning and teaching research findings
· Information on teaching approaches
· Information on other initiatives
· Events, workshops and conferences
Our methods include:
· Working through departmental key contacts, individual
academics, organisations and associations
· Organising workshops (regionally and departmentally)
· Paper and electronic newsletters
· Brokerage, networking and liaison
· Content rich web site
Our priority areas for 2002/2003 are:
Curriculum design, development and assessment
(emphasis on Social Work Education Reform)
This theme is a key and core area of work for SWAPltsn for social
policy and social work, with an emphasis in the coming year on the
new social work degree. We will provide timely and appropriate
resources and expertise so that we can support departments in the
validation, curriculum design and implementation process. The first
event will be on 2nd October 2002 in Coventry focusing on
curriculum design and development.
Recruitment and Employability (emphasis on
Social Policy)
Although the number of students studying elements of social policy
within other subjects or combined degrees is increasing, the
numbers studying it as a single subject degree is declining. We
will work to support social policy academics within departments
that hold the brief for recruitment. The complementary area of work
is ‘employability’. We will develop resources and organise an
event to take this area forward in collaboration with Social Policy
specialists.
E-learning
We will be linking all work in this area to other areas of work.
Disability (2002-2003) Race (2003-2004)
The Special Educational Needs and Disability Act (2001) and The
Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2001 will impact on our subject
communities in the next two years.
All areas will contribute to a menu outlining the various ways that
SWAPltsn is available to work with subject communities, which
alongside the range of resources and expertise will be marketed
and disseminated widely through key contacts and made available
to all constituency colleagues.
To register your interest in contributing to or receiving support in
any of the above, see members of the SWAPltsn team at the
conference or contact us. Tel: 023 8059 7782 Email:
