A one day conference exploring the role of healthy settings in delivering strategic partnership agendas for public health and modernisation 

Thursday 19 september 2002

The conference will showcase a range of healthy settings initiatives and explore how links can be developed between them and how their contribution to wider public health can be maximised. Of key importance will be a consideration of the current contexts provided by the new NHS, area-based initiatives, Local Strategic Partnerships, Health Improvement Programmes and Community Strategies.

Conference Aims
To enable people working in a range of settings across the North West to share practice and debate ideas, issues and approaches.
To enable people to explore potential connections and partnership working between settings, within the context of current Government agendas and priorities.

Conference Format
The conference will combine invited keynote papers with parallel participatory workshops and posters. The workshops will reflect participants' interests, with the morning session focusing on work within individual settings and the afternoon session focusing on processes and ways of working.

The conference will be of interest and relevance to a wide range of individuals and agencies, including:
'Healthy setting' practitioners and co-ordinators
People concerned to promote health in schools, colleges, universities, hospitals, PCTs, prisons, workplaces and other settings
People working in public health, health promotion and health development within PCTs, local authorities, voluntary agencies and community organisations

Background: Healthy Settings Development Unit
The North West has long been regarded as a key focus and natural 'laboratory' for the settings-based approach. In addition to having well-established Healthy School, Healthy Prison and Healthy Workplace initiatives, the Region hosts the national office of the Health for All Network, co-ordinates the English Network of Health Promoting Hospitals, has two cities participating in the WHO Healthy Cities Project, was home to the first English pilot Health Promoting Hospital and saw the establishment of two of the country's first Health Promoting Universities. 
The healthy settings approach seeks to balance 'high visibility' project work with long-term organisational development and change, with the aim of integrating a commitment to health within the cultures, structures and processes of organisational and other settings - thereby contributing to public health development and health improvement. 
A Healthy Settings Development Unit has recently been established within the Faculty of Health at the University of Central Lancashire, with the aim of supporting and facilitating the holistic and integrated development of healthy settings throughout the North West of England. 
This conference offers an opportunity to share experiences within and between settings, to consider opportunities and challenges within the current policy contexts and to develop 'horizontal' networking and partnership-building, exploring how work in specific settings can contribute to the wider public health at local and regional levels.
