Dear Greater Yorkshire
Clearly the luxury of being in such a county as Yorkshire has allowed you to develop a fine appreciation of the subtleties of the landscape palimpsest, archaeological theory and spatial control. I would not wish to hamper this high flighted discussion by grounding it in the mediocrity of development control, land ownership boundaries, designations and accurate spatial referencing.
My contribution would be that GPS is a tool, like all surveying, which is aimed at providing a useable product. Unlike most surveying tools GPS provides locations relative to the World Geodetic System 84 which means the data can be transformed against the Ordnance Survey's Geoid for the UK, ie OSTN02 ans OSGM02. Thus the sub-metre accuracy is maintained relative to the OS grid, regardless of any inaccuracy between OS mapped features and the OS grid.
I recommend www.gps.gov.uk to you all.
I also think a £6k cost for the ability to acquire reliable and accurate locational information is cheap price.
Tom
