Nick et. al.
To help clarify the 'SMR Working Group, ALGAO SMR Group and HBSMR group
hierarchy' issue.
The hierarchical relationship between all the above, at least as far as I
understand it, is on the file:
The SMR Committee is a committee of ALGAO with Dave Barrett as its convenor.
The SMR WORKING PARTY is a body with representatives from both English
Heritage and ALGAO to discuss matters relating to SMRs
The SMR USER and HBSMR USER GROUPS are both sub-groups of ALGAO and meet
under the auspicices of EH. I am not 100% clear myself whether the HBSMR
GROUR is a sub-set of the main user group. (Maybe Dave, Emma or Jim might
clarify!)
Things are made more complex by national boundaries, even though there may
users of HBSMR in both Scotland and Wales.
Neither English Heritage nor ALGAO have any remit north or the border. And
whilst ALGAO includes Wales in its remit, English Heritage does not.
Oh! And I agree with everything in Nick's second paragraph.

Subject: Re: HBMSR - User Group meeting structure
Hello folks
having waded through Jim's Stream of consciousness I have the following
points to make.
Am not entirely sure I can remember the hierarchy of the way the SMR Working
Group, ALGAO SMR Group and HBSMR group work, but think that HBSMR group, if
I recall correctly, is a sub group of all(?) the others. That to me suggests
how we should help focus on what the group is about IE the HBSMR software.
So presentations about more generic SMR issues, whilst interesting and
useful, might be better served elsewhere in that structure, leaving the
HBSMR group to focus on what I think is its main aim - developing the
software and exchanging ideas on how to use it better etc. Obviously those
discussions can't happen in a vacuum, but it is important that we don't get
sidetracked too much into wider debates without bringing them back to their
connection to the software and possible implications for its development
I agree with Jim that the software discussion should come first, and I feel
be given most time as it is the only time we can get together and discuss
issues as a community. However, more warning about the issues and requests
would be useful, but there is also the problem of how many of these that get
onto the agenda which are essentially trivial and could be probably dealt
with outside the meeting e.g. re-sizing windows (admittedly one of mine) at
Shrewsbury. If the list of issues is emailed around, unless someone flags up
to Jim?Exegesis? that they wish to discuss something/think it can be worked
around/is a bad idea , it could be passed on the nod? An idea anyway. This
sort of thing could be helped if Exegesis could give us an idea (like they
did at the Shrewsbury meeting) of how much time & cost something may take.
all the best
