1.Introduction to Stata
Dates: Thursday 5 December to Friday 6 December 2002
Course covers: basic data management, data checking and
reading datasets into the Stata software package.
Teaching is by lectures and practical exercises.
Course fee: £200

2. Basic Statistics
Dates: Monday 6 January to Friday 10 January 2003
Course covers: types and presentation of data; sampling
variation and hypothesis testing; comparison of means;
comparison of proportions; principles of correlation and regression;
sample size calculations; Non-parametric methods;
Bayesian approaches, Teaching is by
lectures and practical exercises.

3. Basic Epidemiological Methods
Dates: Monday 17 February to Friday 21 February 2003
Course covers: assessment of disease risk, epidemiological study designs,
in particular case-control, cohort and ecological
studies, their strengths and weaknesses; measurement
of disease risk; confounding; causality.
Teaching is by lectures, practical
exercises and small group work.
Course fee: £500

4. Critical appraisal of quantitative research
Dates: Friday 28 February
Course covers: systematic approaches to critically appraising
randomised controlled trials, cohort, case-control and cross-sectional studies.
Teaching is by lectures and practical exercises.

5. Advanced Stata
Dates: Thursday 8 May to Friday 9 May 2003
Course covers: advanced functions and expressions, reshaping and
creating data sets, systems variables and accessing saved results,
looping structures, programming basics, organising and documenting
work. It is assumed that course participants will have been using
STATA for at least 6 months.

6. Introduction to Regression Models
Dates: Monday 12 April to Friday 16 May 2003
Course covers: basic terminology and concepts in modeling
(stratified analysis to control for confounding,
interaction, dummy variables); simple and multiple
regression and its synonyms (ANOVA, ANCOVA); odds ratios
and relative risks; logistic regression. Teaching is by
lectures and computer practicals using Stata software.

7. Analysis of longitudinal (cohort) studies
Dates: Monday 19 to Tuesday 20 May 2003
Course covers: analysis of person - time data in Stata including Mantel-Haenszel
methods and Poisson regression of rates, an introduction to survival analysis,
log rank tests and Cox proportional hazards regression.
It is assumed that participants will have some familiarity with regression models.
Teaching methods include formal
lectures, group work and computer practicals using Stata software.

8. Systematic Reviews in Health Care: Meta-Analysis in
Context
Dates: Wednesday 18 June to Friday 20 June 2003
Course covers: principles of meta-analysis; statistical
methods and software; search strategies; publication bias;
clinical applications. Teaching methods include formal
lectures, group work and computer practicals using Stata
software. An optional introductory session to Stata will be
available.

9. Design and analysis of randomised trials
Dates: Monday 7 July to Friday 11 July 2003
Course covers: trial recruitment, sample size;
randomisation; multiple outcomes; repeated measures;
interim and sub-group analyses; economic
evaluation and qualitative methods alongside trials;
CONSORT guidelines. Teaching methods include formal
lectures, group work and computer practicals using Stata
software.
