Re-viewing Space: Space and Place in European Cinema
ECRF Conference, University of Bath, 24-26 April, 2003
Since the pioneering work on Space by Bachelard and Lefebvre, the
concepts of Space and Place have been central concerns of Anthropology
and Social Geography. In the past decade they have attracted growing
attention in Film, Literature and Cultural Studies, leading to work on
urban and rural, local and national, real and imagined/ remembered
spaces, and themes such as rootedness/ rootlessness, and taking and
losing possession of space.
The third annual conference of the European Cinema Research Forum (ECRF)
aims to develop this approach, examining hitherto neglected aspects of
the cinematic construction of space in Europe. As keynote speakers we
hope to have a European director and a leading researcher in the field.
Fuller details will be announced in the Autumn, together with listings
of the previous ECRF conference papers, on an ECRF website and resource
database which are currently under construction.
Abstracts of 250 words should be sent as email attachments to either
Wendy Everett [log in to unmask] or Axel Goodbody [log in to unmask] by
November 1, 2002. They may be on any aspect of the conference theme, but
the organisers would particularly welcome papers which contribute to one
of the following strands. Please indicate the strand to which your paper
most comfortably belongs.
- mapping the self: place/ space and personal identity
- symbolic places and national/ regional identity
- home
- contested spaces
- marginal spaces, peripheries
- shifting and unstable borders and boundaries
- European spaces and the transposition of Hollywood tropes
Accommodation: Participants are responsible for arranging their own
accommodation. Rooms on campus will probably be in short supply, but the
University of Bath Accommodation Office [log in to unmask] will
provide further information, and supply a list of local B&Bs and hotels,
in due course.
